Innishun (wisdom)

Founded in 1979, the Québec native friendship centre provides a gathering place that meets the cultural, material, and social needs of indigenous people living in urban areas, whether they are passing through or settling permanently.

with its project “Innishun (wisdom),” the centre aims to promote social inclusion and strengthen solidarity within Québec’s urban community. It offers an accessible and culturally safe space for indigenous elders (55 and over) to highlight their civic participation, cultural identity, and the transmission of knowledge.

By creating opportunities for gatherings and leisure activities that reflect their interests, the Innishun project helps reinforce elders’ sense of belonging and their active social role, much like within indigenous communities themselves.
