Discretionary Fund

  • Discretionary Fund

The Discretionary Fund is designed to act as a dynamic lever, complementing our regular funding program.

These funds offer flexibility to support one-time initiatives, finance immediate, urgent, or unfundable projects, and encourage innovative actions at the heart of social movements, community action, and advocacy.

Granting Mechanisms

Selection Process

The selection committee determines the award criteria in order to effectively respond to the realities of the communities. The Executive Director, in close collaboration with the philanthropy lead, applies these criteria, ensuring the equitable allocation of resources.

Monitoring and Reporting

To reduce the administrative burden, no detailed reporting is required after the grant is awarded. Only a receipt confirming the reception of the funds is required.

Allocation Criteria

Advocacy and legal defense rooted in knowledge mobilization/transfer

Projects focused on rights advocacy and advocating for political, social, or environmental change. Initiatives promoting knowledge creation and sharing, awareness raising, and/or education around key issues.

Activist Care

Actions that incorporate collective care practices, supporting the well-being of communities in their struggles.

Financial Terms

Total Annual Amount Available

Based on the average amount of support from the previous year of our regular program.

Two Distribution Cycles

Funds will be distributed in two (2) annual cycles. The annual amount will therefore be divided into two (2) parts according to the following two periods: September to February and March to August.

Annual Distribution Ratio

Balanced at 50% for initiatives originating from our groups; that is, initiatives led by organizations supported or previously supported by the Foundation, and 50% for other initiatives with a focus on small organizations or collectives.

Amount Per Allocation

Maximum amount of $5,000 per initiative, adapted to the specific needs of the projects.

Unspent Funds

Amounts not allocated at year-end are carried forward and redistributed the following year, with an increased effort to identify suitable initiatives, ensuring the full utilization of available resources.

Exclusion Criteria

We apply the same exclusion criteria for all of our Funding.
